English and Sessile Oak trees support over 2300 species of wildlife, including jay, purple hairstreak butterflies, badgers and red squirrels, so it's devastating to learn of their plight. Diseases, and pests such as the Oak Processionary Moth caterpillar - as well as a massive reduction in woodland across the UK, due to agriculture, and urban expansion - are the key elements at fault.

In recent years, fracking companies have even turned their attention to surveying Sherwood Forest, putting globally iconic Major Oak and his fellow veteran trees in the area, at huge risk.

Fun fact: oak trees can produce 10,000 acorns in a single 'mast' (acorn producing) year - but only one of these is likely to become a fully mature oak tree.
