Overfishing has caused a population collapse, with activities like bottom trawling and warming seas making it almost impossible for cod numbers to recover. Fished cod are also becoming much smaller - indicating that rather than slowing down the rate of fishing, they are just being caught before reaching maturity. So further collapse is inevitable.
Losing cod also puts larger species who feed on them - such as pollock, seals, sharks and cetaceans - at risk of extinction.
To bypass fishing restrictions, much UK cod is imported from the Barents region, managed by Russia and Norway. Here, as a result, overfishing is now becoming a problem too.
Fun fact: baby cod are called 'codlings'.
