Since the 1960s, Dutch Elm Disease, which is carried on bark beetles, has killed an estimated 60m-100m of the UK's oldest elm trees and reduced stock to mostly weakened smaller hedgerow shrubs.

Efforts are being made to reverse the trend, but many councils take this to mean removing healthy trees as a preventative measure, rather than waiting for the disease to strike.

As a result, the species is clinging on in areas such as Brighton, but almost invisible in others.

Elms have impressive root structures that can cope with both waterlogged and very dry conditions.  This means they are great at preventing soil erosion, as well as providing homes and shelter for wildlife species such as zigzag fly and hairstreak butterfly caterpillars, and orange-fruited lichen, yellowhammer and equally endangered turtle dove.

Fun fact: sapling Elms are called 'suckers'!
