Despite having legal protections in UK waters, the Flapper Skate is being killed in scores by commercial fishing practices such as bottom trawling which result in them becoming bycatch.

A member of the shark family, their favoured places to hang out are deep, muddy, and largely (nowadays), Scottish waters.  But their egg-laying nurseries are often in shallower cobbled and rocky areas closer to shorelines.  This makes them all too easy to hurt, accidentally or intentionally: habitat degradation and most heinous of all, trophy hunting, have drastically reduced their numbers in UK waters and they are currently one of our most critically endangered native species.

A crucial top predator, it is essential we save them to preserve healthy ecosystems.

Fun fact: when left alone flapper skates can reach between 50-100 years old!
