Getting its name from its grizzled brown-grey appearance and speedy 'skipping' flight, this butterfly often gets mistaken for a moth.

It loves strawberries but is most often found lying low in chalklands or brownfield sites. Habitat loss and chemical sprays - particularly around rural powerlines - are becoming a massive threat to Grizzled Skippers, who rely on these nature corridors to survive.

Thanks to wetter weather and the increased cost and shortage of manual labour, Brits grow fewer strawberries (and other soft fruits) than ever before, importing them from Morocco and Spain - this means we are steadily eradicating the Grizzled Skipper's host plants, rapidly speeding up their decline.

At various stages in their cycle they are food for other species, such as spiders, hedgehogs, frogs, and pollinators such as wasps and flies - so their loss puts them at risk too.

Fun fact: skipper larvae create little 'tents' by binding leaves together with silk.
