Dormice prefer a mix of habitats for food and shelter, but their biggest enemy is intensive tree coppicing and woodland clearance for farmland. Each of these human activities has made traditional woodland corridors rare, impacting the dormouse's ability to find mates and suitable cover from natural predators such as domestic cats and birds of prey.
Climate change has also created a deadly mismatch between dormice hibernation periods and available food sources.
Dormice famously sleep for around six months of every year - hence their name, which derives from the French 'dormir' - to sleep.
Fun fact: Dormice are the only mouse species with a fluffy tail - and a caught dormouse can shed its fur and tail skin to break loose and escape!
