Hen Harriers live on heathlands and grass moorlands. Most conservation groups, including the RSPB agree that most hen harrier deaths occur on such land that's in the hands of organised grouse hunts.
Here the birds are illegally killed - mostly by poisoning or trapping, but also via egg theft and shooting - by grouse shoot organisers and gamekeepers who believe them to be in direct conflict with those paying to partake in grouse shooting.
In simple terms, they want to hen harrier to stop eating grouse for survival so fee paying customers can shoot at them for 'fun'.
The net result is that reproduction rates are falling rapidly and survival rates for young harriers is horrifically low.
Fun fact: Hen harriers are known as colloquially as 'Sky Dancers' thanks to an elaborate, showy flight the males perform to attract mates.
