This indicator species' preferred habitat is suffering huge degradation:.  Silt and excessive nutrient run-off caused by livestock farming, poor pollution management. and bad waterways management (dredging, artificial damming, channeling, draining...) drastically degrades their habitat, making it difficult to mate and feed.

Numbers of their host fish, salmon and trout, on whose gills they rely in their early larvae stages of development, are also being vastly reduced by disease and by overfishing for human and pet consumption.

Fun fact: pearl mussels are a crucial bivalve species and can filter up to 50litres of water each day.
