Pool Frogs are easily identifiable by their lime green back stripe (here represented in real gold ).

They prefer a warm, sunlit pool with gentle banks - Norfolk's 'Pingo Ponds' (a series of shallow dimples created by ice age melt-back) are ideal.

But over time, expansion of building and agricultural projects - and interbreeding with the more prolific marsh frogs - has meant a huge disappearance of numbers and any suitable habitat sites across the UK- and the Pool Frog is rapidly declining as a result.

They were officially declared extinct in 1995 - due to habitat loss - but a reintroduction scheme using Swedish pool frogs that were almost identical genetically to those we previously had in the UK, was introduced to try and bring them back - but recovery is very slow and known dispersal currently confined to Norfolk.

Fun fact: male frogs make a loud noise like a rotating rusty wheel during mating season.
