Puffin habitats are thinning out at an astonishing rate. Nest sites are increasingly infested by predators such as rats, who attack adult birds and eat eggs and newly-hatched pufflings. In Ireland and the West coast of Scotland, predator eradication programs are now in place, but puffin numbers are proving slow to recover.
Discarded fishing nets, bird flu, and improperly sited offshore wind farms, have also left this iconic species struggling for survival.
As global waters become warmer thanks to climate change, populations of sand eels, (puffins' primary food source) are also negatively impacted. Consequently, puffins must travel further and further distances to find food. Those that make it back to their nesting sites are often too exhausted to fend off the inevitable attacks and food theft by black-backed and herring gulls, leaving females and pufflings also at risk of starvation and neglect.
Fun fact: Puffins mate for life, meeting up with the same mate at the same burrow each mating season for over 20 years.
