As prolific sequesters of seed heads and acorns, Red Squirrels play a crucial role in the regeneration of woodlands.
Their key threat in the UK is famously the grey squirrel, which carries the squirrelpox virus and, as larger specimens, can out-compete reds for food and homes.
The diminishing number and health of our woodlands - especially pine forests, the reds' primary habitat - is also a risk.
Their numbers have declined from 3.5million to only 120,000 since greys were introduced to Britain by Victorian enthusiasts as as an ornamental species to their parklands
120,000 sounds a lot - but with their health at severe risk and habitats fragmenting, plus the ever present threat of natural predators any more pressure could see these beautiful animals become functionally extinct.
