Wood Whites enjoy open woodland glades - so mismanaged woodland areas, which have been left to over-mature and grow very dense and dark, or worse, no woodland at all - means their natural habitats are becoming more fragmented over time. Over-mowing of farmland borders are also reducing habitats. Consequently, finding suitable mating grounds and larval food plants is now virtually impossible for this beautiful butterfly in the UK.
Climate change has also impacted breeding summers: while the warmer weather encourages breeding, larval food plants are not keeping pace, so are not around to feed the emerging young.
Butterflies have recently been found breeding twice a year in some areas of the UK - but so far, numbers have not sufficiently recovered to remove the 'critically endangered' tag.
Fun fact: Wood whites fly very slowly and delicately, and are often called, 'Lady of the Woods' thanks to the soft sweeping nature of their movements.
