Making it law to add measures such as swift bricks to new housing could potentially save an iconic species that saw a 50% decline in numbers, within a decade and continues to fall foul of climate change and habitat loss. A single church in Suffolk fitted hundreds of swift boxes to the outside of the building, and was found to be supporting a colony of 60 breeding pairs of swifts within the first couple of years!

Yet consecutive governments still refuse to add legislation to any of their environmental or housing bills to protect the species - claiming it is the responsibility of each individual builder or home owner to add them.
