Watermark and willow scab fungal diseases are steadily eating away at the UK's willow trees, in what is left of their ever-decreasing watery habitats.
The Willow prevents bank erosion and supports a variety of caterpillars, saw moths and leaf beetles - which in turn are food sources to small mammals and bird species. It also provides vital shade and helps to regulate water flow for waterborne species.
Historically they were a common sight along riverbanks with willow wood being prolifically used in industrial practices such as basket making and fencing - hence the glorious Wind in the Willows book title being so relatable.
Fun fact: willow bark contains an aspirin-like natural pain killer called salicylic acid, and was historically chewed to relieve toothache and headaches.
